Timisoara I used to live in Timisoara, the garden city. Timisoara was also nicknamed "The town of Roses/Flowers" and "Little Vienna". The town lies on the banks of The Bega River, in the middle of large fields, in the western part of the country. Timisoara is more than 700 years old. It’s name comes from The Timis River, ancient Tibiscum In ancient times the Zurobara citadel was standing on the present territory, a settlement which existed in the times of the Dacians and Romans. Timisoara is the Roman Colony of Zambara. The first documentary mention of the town dates from 1212, "Castrum Temessiensis or Timicienesses". Destroyed by the invasions of the Tarts in the 13th century, the citadel was completely restored and in the following century, it became The Royal Residence of Charles Robert of Anjou (1316-1325). After a powerful earthquake, the citadel was rebuilt and restored by Iancu of Hunedoara, The Prince of Transylvania on the site where the Banat Museum lies today. After 1716 a citadel was raised there. In the 18th - 19th centuries, Timisoara was changed by town-planning works: The Bega River was canalized, dams were erected, buildings and monuments were made At the end of the 18th century the town was considered to be one of the cleanest and most beautiful European towns. At the end of the 19th century, Timisoara ranked among the most modern "green" towns of Europe. Timisoara was one of the first towns in Europe to use horse trams in 1869. Timisoara was the first town in Europe to introduce public electric lighting in 1884. Timisoara was the first town in Romania to use public transportation by water in 1869. Timisoara was the first town in Romania to use the first electric streetcars in 1899. Timisoara was the first town in Romania to have a beer factory in 1718. In 1849 Timisoara becomes the capital of Banat. In 1857 the town is connected to the European Railway. In 1867 the Horse Tramway Network is installed. Beethoven’s great love, Johanna von Greth was buried in the Hero’s Cemetery in Timisoara. Johnny Weissmuller better known as Tarzan, the fearless hero of the jungle was born in Freidorf, Timisoara in 1904. The well known French engineer G. Eiffel built an iron bridge over the Bega. According to the famous violinist Yehudi Menuhin, the Ion Vidu Music High School in Timisoara has a concert hall with the best acoustics in Europe.
